Baby Kate is One!

Our Baby Kate turned one year old on January 26. This has been the fastest year yet! She has brought such joy to our family. Before she was born I couldn't imagine loving another baby as much as I loved Owen. My mom told me that your heart expands the more children you have, and I have to say that she knows what she's talking about. The love that I feel for our sweet baby Kate is immeasureable just as the love that I feel for our precious little red head.

Kate's 1 year checkup was on Feb 2. She weighs 16 pounds, 12 ounces (less than 3%), is 29 inches tall (45%) and her head measures 42 cm (still less than 3%, but still growing). She is our petite princess!

The doctor was a little concerned about her weight. We took her to the doctor 2 weeks prior to her well-baby checkup for a virus and she weighed 16 pounds, 3 ounces. At her 9 month checkup she weighed exactly 16 pounds. So she only gained 3 ounces in 3 months, which is unusual, but then she gained 12 ounces in the 2 weeks prior to her checkup, which is good. So, he said to watch her diet and encourage her to eat more table food than baby food, which she's already doing anyway. She's pretty much over and bored with baby food and us feeding her! The doctor looked at Owen's chart and he was in the exact same percentile for weight at 1 year old, so it's very possible that she's just following in her skinny brother's footsteps!

She is hitting her developmental milestones and is doing very well otherwise. She isn't pulling up to her feet and he thought that she really should be doing that at this age. So he checked out the strength of her legs and said that she's weaker than he would like for her to be. He encouraged us to walk with her more and do things that encourage her to have to put weight on her feet and legs. He said that we should put her in the exersaucer on the lowest setting so she'll stand more and bear more weight. I told him that over her birthday weekend she started "walking" while holding someone's hands. He said to do much more of that. All in all he's not super worried, but he said that even if she's not walking at a year old she should be pulling up and cruising along the furniture. Maybe we've spoiled her too much by holding her all the time!

Now for an update on her personality and fun things that she's doing.
* She started "walking" while holding our hands over her birthday week/weekend. She squeals and her face lights up when she's doing it. Just precious!
* She is crawling at lightning speed and can keep up very well with Owen.
* She is playing peek-a-boo by covering her eyes with her little hands.
* She has started chewing on her crib, which makes us so very proud. Owen wasn't nearly as interested in using his crib as a teether so we've had to invest in extra protectors for 3 of the 4 sides of her crib.
* She says 'mama' and 'dada' very clearly and purposefully. Owen and I both thought that she said 'yay' the other day while throwing her arms in the air.
* She says "bye-bye" and waves.
* She shows how big she is by putting both arms in the air.
* She loves to feed herself and can hold her sippy cup by herself.
* She is quite the stinker and loves to push the envelope. She frequently tries to touch the fireplace, the tv receiver box, and the nightlights upstairs just to keep us crazy! She starts to touch them and we tell her no, to which she looks over her shoulder at us and smiles her beautiful little smile.
* She has 6 teeth now, 4 on top and 2 on bottom. Sometimes she'll give you a tight hug and then bite your shoulder/neck. Not such a pleasant thing with 6 teeth now!
* Her favorite things to play with are baby dolls and books. She also loves to play with anything that her brother says she can't play with!
* She has a strong face that is quite a sight to behold. She usually does it when she's finished eating and she wants to really get our attention.

Guess that's about it for now. This became a lot more wordy than I anticipated, but hope you like the update. Here are some pics of Kate on her actual birthday which was a few days before her party. We had a small family celebration with Kate getting to eat her first cupcake.  As you can see she loved it!

Such a sweet update! Baby Kate is a year old! I can hardly believe it! And there is nothing wrong with a petite little princess as long as she's healthy!

Thanks Andrea! I hope to meet your little princess sometime. I'd love to see you too! I'm sure you're already used to playing second fiddle to little Mattie Kay. It starts to happen slowly before the baby comes, but man afterwards, you become the person who carries the star around! Glad you're loving being a mommy. It's the best job in the world!
